My citizenship oath is scheduled for May 21st.Yesterday, few people in my neighborhood received tickets for putting yard waste bags outside before the scheduled pick up date. I was one of them.
I am not sure if this will have any negative impact on my oath ceremony or not? On the ticket, they scheduled a court date on June18th. I tried called the court today and they told me the fine is about 150 dollars or so for that. Do you I have anything to worry about ?Any thoughts or ideas to help me avoid any negative impact on my oath would be greatly appreciated.

Most of the time garbage fines doesn't mean much. Good chunk of the fine/fee is administrative fee's so don't worry about it. It's not really a ticket persay. in my city you just get a notice by an employee of the sanitation department not a police officer

Just disclose it on your oath letter and try to see if you can resolve this matter before the oath date despite the court date being after you are scheduled to take the oath.

I don't know anything about tickets but ---
If it is at all possible try to pay the ticket AHEAD of your court date ---and get a receipt of PAID to take to oath ,, then your chances of having any problems are even less, with proof that its been taken care of.

good luck :-)

Thank you guys, I appreciate your input .. I just went to the court to see if I can pay it and the clerk told me I can not pay it since she does not know the amount I have to pay, only the judge can decide on that. She told me I can just come to the court next week and try to get on the docket for that day so I can pay it. Hopefully, I can do that early next week and it will not become an issue for sure. After all I had to go through, I would hate for this fine to be a major obstacle ..

The worst case scenario is IO taking you aside and asking you if it has been paid and telling you have to pay it before oath, or reschedule oath..very unlikely to happen as its a minor ticket, but it only takes one IO on a power trip to do so.

Thank you Bobsmyth .. I am going to do my best to pay it before the oath date. I hope the IO then would be nice and would not make an issue out of it

Most likely it won't be an issue, but as we have seen in past..some IOs like to play hard ball.

That is very true. I will make sure to have as much documents with me as possible to show it is not a major offence if I do not get to resolve it before my oath date.

I would suggest you to discuss with an immigration lawyer before decide what to do. You may even not need to disclose it and not confuse any officer (seems it is an administrative ticket). It is very possible you cannot pay it before June18th since only judge can decide how much you will pay.

Thank you immigrant.I will talk with my lawyer about for sure. I just got my oath letter and item number 3 asks if I KNOWINGLY committed any crime or offense which in this case I did not know this was against city rules. I am also going to try and get a court date earlier next week to resolve this issue

And it is a city rule not a state or federal law for sure. I don't think you should disclose it. My advise is don't confuse them with telling this issue.

I don't think that having a minor garbage ticket for a household has anything to do with 'good moral character'. Is the ticket addressed to you or the household? (in other words, what if your child put the garbage out early..)

Talking to a lawyer over such a trivial issue sounds over the top to me, but maybe I'm underestimating the seriousness of such a ticket. If the ticket is not written to your name, I would not confuse USCIS with the details.

Congrats on your oath date btw.

Thank you :-). The ticket was addressed to me, they even misspelled my name on it. The more I think about it, the more I do not believe it should have any impact at all since I did not knowingly caused this ticket. The few people who got it on my street did not know anything about a stupid city law like that.

Hello everyone, I called my lawyer this morning to ask about the ticket I got from the city. One of her legal staff told me I do not need to worry about this ticket since it is not an offense really.

Try to pay before oath

Hi,

I think you can try to pay it off before oath date but if not do not sweat it..
Just tell about it at the oath ceremony, 99% it will not be a problem since it is a minor ticket. They may ask you if you have paid/going to pay it or not.
Most probably they wont make a fuss about it.

All the best

Thank you, I am going for sure to try and pay it as soon as I can, I have to wait till the court has it in the system and see if I can walk in for a court date so I can pay it

Most likely this ticket is just for a civil violation, not a criminal offense. But it would still be classified as a citation.

However, the question asks "Have you ever been arrested, cited or detained by any law enforcement officer", so if the person issuing the citation was not a law enforcement officer (suppose it was a Homeowner's Association board member) then I would answer NO to that question (of course, maybe you don't know who left the ticket).
