I'm new here -- newbie questions

Hi all, I'm new to this process, and I have two questions that are probably very basic -- I'm sorry if you've been asked this 200 times before. I'm having a hard time finding this information online.

I have filed my application for the DV2009 lottery, and I understand now all I can do is wait and hope for the best. I see people with their lottery numbers in their siglines with happy or sad smiley faces.

1. Does everyone get a number? (In other words, even if you have no chance at all, do you still get a number? 999999999 etc.?)

2. There is talk about numbers being called in order. How does this work?

3. I see the numbers are given per region. How do you find out if your number is high or low for your region?

4. Are the chances different for different regions? (Are the number of visas per region fixed, or the chance in every region?)

Thanks a lot for any information you might be able to give me. Much appreciated.

1) if you win, you get a number.
2) they are called in order. Read the forum.
3) you read the forum - it's all explained here.
4) chances of what? winning? getting through the interview? getting an interview? please be specific.
The number of visas per country is fixed, which you would have known if you have read some of the posts in this forum or at least the instructions for the lottery.

Thanks. Well, there's really quite a lot to read on the forum, hence my question.

4) Chances of winning. The number of visas per region is fixed, yes, I know that, but I don't know the number of applicants per region. If, say, Europe gets 10,000 visas and Africa also, and Africa gets 100,000 applications and Europe only 20,000, that makes a difference. That's the kind of data I am looking for.

nobody knows the total number of applicants for a particular year until after the lottery when DOS publishes the statistics. Then, the total number of visas per country is also published after the fiscal year ends.
Since you can only play based on your own country of birth, country of birth of your spouse or country of birth of your parents (in some cases), it really doesn't do you much good to calculate your chances in advance. You can look through the stats published by DOS and determine the number of visas per country per year, calculate your chances, etc., if you have time and if your spouse/parents were born in a country/region different from your own.
