if I send my original birth and marriage certificate

Highly doubtful.

I read in another thread you are in Canada?

There's a place in the US called Tampabaytranslations.com , thats who we used to have the translation and certification done.

If not them, find a translation service near your home.

Most importantly, NEVER send original docs unless specifically requested.

I think a copy is fine.
And if your BC is from HK (English & Chinese) and your marriage license from Canada (English) then you don't even need any translation.

Keep the originals and bring them to the interview, along with a copy of them.

Why would you ever...EVER send them the original or ANYTHING?!?! Copies of everything, especially stuff like your I-94.

I phoned to the NVC center today, the lady told me that, basically, certified copy=orginal document, I have to ask HK government to issue me a copy.

And she said if I send her the orginal document, I can get it back while interview.

WHY???
The instructions clearly say that you can send a copy unless otherwise specified.

Send a copy and bring the original to the interview.

That's your choice. We had to send my husbands tax returns twice and then show them again in the interview because 'he couldn't find it in our file.'
Things get lost

On the application they ask for a certified copy. This should be interpreted as:

Send a copy along with the application, then bring an original to the interview so the copy can be verified. I also advise that you take another copy along with the original to the interview.

Unless you receive a specific RFE for an original, I would not even consider sending an original. If you spoke to customer service(1-800 number), ignore their advice, it is normally nonsense.

The above does not constitute formal legal advice and is simply my opinion.

I think they are very clear about it here: http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/fieldoffices/scnational/index.htm#H
"14. USCIS no longer routinely requires submission of original documents or "certified copies." Instead, ordinary legible photocopies of such documents (including naturalization certificates and alien registration cards) will be acceptable for initial filing and approval of petitions and applications.
At the discretion of the officer, original documents may still be required in individual cases. Please be advised that USCIS no longer returns original documents submitted with the exception of Certificates of Naturalization, Forms I-551, Permanent Resident Card, Forms I-94, Arrival/Departure Document, valid passports, or those specifically requested by the officer. Such documents will be returned when they are no longer needed."

But they keep asking me for original or certified copy, what should I do?
phone to NVC and tell them I will bring with me original copy for interview?

Dear micmic,

I am sorry to hear that.

In this case, I would suggest you to reissue those documents from HK Immigation department.

I think u can call directly to HK immigation office, department of marriage record and reissue your marriage certificate(if u guys married in HK). The phone number is as follow: http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/address_6_1.htm

Regarding to your birth certificate, The phone number is as follow:http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/address_5_1.htm

When u call them, please 011 852 ......... I think HK government organization usually very efficient.

micmic,

Is there a reason for starting a new thread on the same topic you had o your yesterday's thread? I really don't see one.
I had to go back and read the previous one to get more info about your question, to see who's asking for the original or certified copies of your documents. It would have been a lot easier to have all the info in one place.
Just my opinion...

It just doesn't make sense that they're asking you for the originals, as Anahit said, they only need copies now. Are you sure they're asking for certified copies and not for a certified translations of your bc?

yes, they are asking for original or certified copy

coz my HK birth cert is in both chinese and english

anyway, it takes time for apple a certified copy from oversea (I am a canad immigrant), I may send them the original one

Dear Micmic,

I am checking my BC. My BC is pink colour background, with red printed words and hand writing black words. The title is 'Certified copy of An Entry in a Register of Births' 'Kept in terms of the births and deaths registration ordinance'. Are u having the same one?

I'm from Taiwan, I didn't even have a birth certificate!
I only submitted a COPY straight from FedEx Kinkos, just a copy, NOT certified copy, of my household registration. USCIS took it, they never asked for anything during our interview.

Exactly. Could the original poster please tell us who is telling him to send the original. Have you even filed your application yet? If it is an RFE for the original, then I may consider it, but if you are only sending in your application, who told you to send the original?
