I94 expiration date

I travelled outside of US last year and returned using AP (my I485 case is pending). On the I94 form, the border officer gave me only one year.

So my question is - after that expiration date, am I illegal? Or as long as my I485 is pending, it is ok?

I have renewed my AP. So if need to, I can go out and come back again so that the expiration date will extend. But I am just thinking if this is really necessary ...

----- You can go out if you have new approved AP in hand before departure from US and can enter US with valid AP, if you want to go out ONLY to get new I-94 it is NOT needed, you are in status.
