SOrry topic should be I551 on expired passport!! Sorry...

Hello.
I'm 26 and I lived in the States since when I was 11.
Due to some personal reasons, I decided to file n400 few months ago only. ( I thought I'll live in back in my home country, but I've finally gave up on that.)
Unfortunately My green card expires on 11/18/2009.

Before I filed n400 and asked the USCIS officer at the Baltimore location, she told me that around Mid October, I'll get a letter saying that I have to come back to the office and get a temp renewal of my green card. HOWEVER nothing came in the mail. So I went back few days ago and they told me that that's NOT true. SO the agent gave me a I-551 for a year on my EXPIRED passport. She told me that it would be a good idea to get a valid passport and bring it back. HOWEVER!!!! Since my home country requires any males to serve in military for 2 years, embassey of my country told me that I didn't file any extension so they can't give me a new passport.

Now I'm in a situation where my green card is about to expire. AND I can't get a new passport. HOWEVER i have a i551 on an expired passport. (I551 good til november of 2010. ) ANd my interview day for the naturalization is Dec. 3rd. ...am I safe? Or will this cause any trouble? Can I go back to the office and request a i551 on a paper or something that is not passport? What can I do to make sure I'm ok.

THanks in advance.
Sorry it's long...

If your green Card is to expire then file Form I-90 and you will get I-90 filing receipt and take that receipt and the passport that has stamp with you when you go for interview.

Do I file online to get a receipt? or do I file in person?

When you filed your N-400, was there six months or more of validity left on your green card (i.e. did you file before 5/18/09)? If yes, you don't need to file I-90 for renewal; your expired GC and the I-551 stamp you already have in your passport is sufficient for the interview (even though your passport is expired).

No I didn't have more than 6 months...more like 3-4 months.

In that case, you were supposed to apply for the renewal. The rule is that those who had more than 6 months remaining on the GC when they apply for naturalization are exempt from having to renew the GC. Unfortunately you don't qualify for the exemption. You should eFile the I-90 so you can get a printable receipt immediately to carry to the interview. If you do paper filing the receipt will be in the mail and it may not arrive before the interview.
