My status:
I485 pending (application based on my husband's approved I140).

Currently I'm an H1b holder and plan to quit my job.
Is it necessary to apply for H4?
----------many prefer to stay on H1 and H4 status till I-485 is approved. it is not necessary but if anything goes wrong with I-485 you will have H4 status as back up to stay(if spouse on H1 status )
Or I just stay as AOS.
--------- that is upto you and you will need approved AP if want to go out and enter US
