I have translated the birth certificates, and I am planning to have a freind of mine (who happens to work at the same university) to sign it and certify that he is competent in both languages.
do you guys think that would be enough, or do I really need to go to a professional translator for this?

thanks a lot for your help

Well I beleive there are some professional trqnslators avaliable .........its good to get from them!!!

It can be anyone you want. You don't even have to ask your friend, I signed everything myself. The only problem is that the translation needs to be notarized, at least my attorney asked me to, and for the life of me I could not find a notary public who'd sign a document with part of in foreign language, despite the fact that they only had to certify my signature on the statement.
