I'm really confused about the whole visum applications and everything, basically. So I was wondering if anybody on here could help me. I think I need the B2 visa, but I am not sure at all.

Here's the situation and relevant information:
I want to travel to New York city and spend 2 years there with my American girlfriend untill she finishes her school and then move back to Europe. I plan on working and living in New York, but I have no particulair first choice of the type of work to do. I'd basically take any job.

I'm an 21-year old native citizen of the Netherlands and have already flown to the United States twice and stayed there for a month each time with a really good friend of mine. I have no criminal record, over 4 years of working experience and I have dropped out of high school in the pre-graduation year of a HAVO (Higher General Continued Education - you can look it up in wikipedia for a more thorough explaination) education, the dropping out was because I was not happy with the type of education I was getting from the school. Since then I've started self-educating myself and have now started following a Medicine education. And I am more than willing to do a GED test or any examination. I could explain more if more detailed information is needed.

The main thing that confuses me is, basically, if I need the B2 visa if I want to work, live and possibily study like getting a GED or some courses in New York city for around 2 years. I have researched it online, but I want to be sure. Also I'm unaware of how to extend a visa, if that is possible. This because all the internet sites either talk about temporary as 6 months or for life.

If somebody could help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

With kind regards.

With B2 visas, when you enter the US you are generally granted 6 months entry (can be less, but never more than 6 months). You can apply for a 6 month extension, though this is usually for life or death situations.

Also, seeing as you're from a VWP country and are young (ie, not of retirement age) then it will be extremely difficult to get a B2 approved.

If you want to work, then you will not be able to do this on a B visa as this does not allow work (unless its like a business meeting etc).........if you're looking at taking classes then an F1 student visa will be more appropriate for your situation, and with visa you are permitted to work up to 20 hrs on campus.

Thanks for the answer. If I want to work a regular job of 40 hours a week, what type of visa would I need then? I like how the F1 student visa will work, but I don't think 20 hours of work will cover for the expenses.
