Do you mean US$40k?

If you really have 40'000 US$, you don't need to worry, you won't need an affidavit of support. Check the poverty guidelines to see what is usually consider as sufficient: http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_1327.html

I am bit confused here. I have the same problem as robediente. A affidavit of support is not compulsory for DV2009 ? What if I show my property (house) here in UK (if I sell I will get approx. £70K) and about £10K bank balance for a family of 4 people. Is it acceptable. please your view ?

Once again: Affidavit of support is NOT a requirement for DV visas! Btw: a house that you can sell usually also counts as an asset, however, I know that the embassy in Germany doesn't accept cars.
