I am a winner dv 2009, I must be selling my properties before the interview? or I must continue making my life in my country calmly, doing investments and after being approved my visa, to do everything for the change to the USA? I am from Caracas - Venezuela, in my country there are exchange control, is not easy to exchange our money to dollars.

Do NOT sell any property before your visa is approved.... (this is also clearly stated in the notification letter)

ok, but my car, for example,i pay for my car, but it s not in my name, if i sell my car, i can buy other or make a deposit in my account.

The problem is: if you get stuck in a more detailed background check, it might take several months until you get the visa. If you own a house, you can also use that to prove your financial stability. However, a car doesn't count (at least not in Germany). So how can you sell a car that is not in your name?

well, my car i pay for that, the name is my father, but no problem, i can sell my car, it s my money, my father help me to sell my car, and my idea is save money in my account. it is better??

You can always sell your car and put the money into your bank account. It is completely your choice. Just know the risk if you don't get the visa for whatever reason.

If I'm not mistaken, for bank statements, you need to show at least the last 3 months of your bank statements. So, if you need to sell your car, sell it at least 3 months before the interview. If not, it will look very suspicious.

I'm facing the same situation. Erm, not sure if my car will be counted as my "own money" i have a car that is under my name. Besides i do not have sufficient fund so far, good thing is there's still a year to go bad thing is my income doesn't help me to save enough money to go there, I'm in IT industry, so i was wondering if there's any way i can do to avoid disaster happen. Anyone who has been successful get an IT job before the interview? Please give me some specific guides. I'll be appreciated Thank you :)

You can give it a try and find an IT job over the internet. There are a lot of IT job available in the U.S for foreigner. Try applying for them. If you can get the job offer from them, it will eliminate your problem of having lack of funds.

Like I said in the previous post, it might be difficult to justify your current immigration status to an employer. You can't say that you already a Permanent Resident, and saying that you might get a Green Card in the future might confused the employer. Just apply a job as if you're not getting the Green Card. Try applying to jobs that offer H1B sponsorship. All you need is a job offer letter from the company that show the position, hours, salary, etc. Applying H1B visa will not affect the DV process.

Once you get the Green Card/DV visa, just ignore or cancel the H1B visa process and continue working as a Permanent Resident.

If you're lucky, you might find a company who understand your situation and give you a job offer but only allow you to start working once you received your DV visa/Green Card. Then again, I never seen this happen because most American companies are clueless about the U.S immigration system and afraid to take risk in hiring foreign workers.

no man dont sell anyhing pleaese ;its a big chance they refuse your visa and then what ?! be careful -dont trust too much a ?

Owning a house (or car) will make no difference to your application unless you are able to prove it has any value above any mortgage or loan liabilities. That might be difficult if property values are shifting.

You should make your application as simple as possible. Less to go wrong.

The most important thing is... do you have enough liquid funds to get established in the US until you can find a job? Or will someone sponsor you? That's what they will want to know in the consular interview. It's hard to beat cash in your bank account for simplicity.

As the other posters say it is not a good idea to sell your house/car until you have the visa. It's entirely up to USCIS/CP to decide whether to grant the visa to you. How confident are you the visa will be granted?

On the otherhand if you will not have sufficient funds by the interview date, have no sponsor, AND you are certain your application, educational qualifications, and work experience are good, then liquidating your property (or car) might be something to think about.

BTW, if you still own your house once you enter the US and become a permanent resident, any capital gains from the sale of your apartment must be declared in your next US tax return. If you have lived in the house at least 2 years then deductables are $250,000. You are liable for 15% tax on the balance of the capital gain.

Depending on the gains, there might be a case for selling any property before you enter the US under this program.

You are advised to seek independant advice on the tax implications of becoming a US permanent resident.
