I-864 Joint Sponsor's passport expired

Has anyone presented a passport, which is past expiration date as the evidence of sponsor's/joint sponsor's citizenship for the purposes of filing I-864. Our joint sponsor's birth certificate has been lost and the passport has expired in January. Since it would take a few weeks to get a replacement for either one, we are considering attaching a copy of the expired passport, if this would not be an issue with USCIS. Can this cause a rejection of the affidavit of support?

Does the passport show birth in the U.S. or another country? If in the U.S., it could still be enough. It's a descretionary matter.
