I-693 TB skin test

Hi all,

I just got my medical exam done for my AOS, and my TB skin test came back positive. Since I'm from India, itis possible that I received the DPT vaccine or that I was exposed to the germs somehow. My question is, does USCIS have problems approving the AOS if your TB skin test came back positive, even if the Chest X-ray was normal? I'm going tomorrow for my chest x-ray, but I'm sure I should be ok, since I've been in US for 3 years and never had a serious medical condition before.

Have people received their GC's without any issue even if the TB test was positive?

Please provide your inputs.... Thanks so much

No USCIS does not have an issue if your TB test came positive and then the chest x-ray was negative(meaning no TB)

Any doctor would tell you that once you have taken DPT while a child, this will cause the TB Skin test to come positive (does have a few exceptions). You would need to get either a Chest X-Ray or the tb gold quantiferon test. I also had a positive skin test, and went for the X-ray which came out clear. I can understand the anxiety on your end, just wait for the results buddy.

I meant the DPT vaccine kids get in India... not the US one

This being the case, how does any Indian student get past the US university requirements which generally require TB skin test. Perhaps this explains why a graduate student with active TB created a real problem at a university my child attended. If they were used to ignoring the test as a false positive at the health service, that explains a lot..

Is there something called DPT test?? Never heard of it.

All I know is the PPD Skin Test. 70% Indian population PPD Test comes positive - that is because we get BCG vaccination when we were kids and BCG can cause a positive Mantoux (PPD) skin test. You should be fine as the x-ray will be negative. Most of the doctors in US don't know anything about the BCG vaccination. Trust me - my wife is a nurse and she had her skin test (as part of the job requirements) - well, it was positive. She tried explaining to the doctor about the BCG vaccination but they had no clue...My wife's x-ray was all clear. Same happened to me - PPD test was positive but x-ray was clear of TB.

BCG vaccine is most effective in preventing tuberculosis for a duration of 15-20years and because it is prepared from a strain of weakened live bovine tuberculosis bacteria - the PPD skin test will always throw a positive.

When you have a positive PPD test you will be send for an X-ray and that will determine if you have an active TB or not. If Chest X-ray is clear - the doc will mention that in your form (I-693) and USCIS will not issue an RFE.

Really? Positive Skin Test is always, always sent for an x-Ray and if x-ray is negative then no TB. No one ignores that. Maybe you can provide us the name of the University and we can look it up - looks like they didn't follow the guidelines.

Guys, I have a question. My TB skin test came back positive, but X-rays were clear. Doctor (from the Health Department) said I should take treatment. I read in the CDC guidelines that's only a recommendation. He said it is only recommended, but because I said I would not take it, he said he would write it down and most likely USCIS will send my paperwork back.
The CDC guidelines state the civil surgeon should give you the medical clearance regardless of whether or not you take the treatment. Should I insist that he signs, or say I will take the treatment even if I don't or go to a different surgeon??? Please help!

Thanks.
