It seems that you might try to revive your H1-B visa in case you had one with your present employer. In my case, I decided it was useless to pay for both EAD and a visa, since it was a 7th year extension. However I think it is worth asking your attorney if this is not a valid option in the mean time. You don't care about the H1 limit since you already have/had it with the same employer. It costs a lot of money, though.
Also, my employer told me a year ago when I was worrying about not getting the EAD on time that they will have to fire me and re-hire me when I get the card, even if we talk about a couple of days! But they were willing to do it.
Technically you are in status - that's my understanding - so there is no problem to BE physically here in the US while on adjustment of status, yet you cannot work without either a work visa or a work permit. Good luck to you, I hope you'll get the card soon enough. A friend of mine (not transferred though) got approved recently in about 6-7 weeks.
