I have to file my I-485 (Aug 17 2007, deadline) and don't have my marriage certificate. We got married 4 yrs back but never registered the marriage. If I get a marriage certificate from the Indian consulate in US will that work? If not, is there any other way out? Would it be ok to get married here or would the authorities find it fishy?

-------------how did the spouse get H4 visa? if she is on H4? it is your mistake not to get marriage registred
If I get a marriage certificate from the Indian consulate in US will that work?
------------ I dont know but USCIS dont accept Birth Certificate Issued by Indian Embassy or consulate
If not, is there any other way out?
------------------- get in touch with lawyer in India, he can send you papers to sign, you and your wife sign the forms and Anyone from India can sign as witness and lawyer can get marriage certificate in 1-2 day if he gives"chai Pani" to Clerk in registrar office and then he can fax you the copy and you need only copy to send with wife I-485 and later he can mail you the original marriage certificate that you should keep with you.

For the benefit of others in the same situation, this is what my lawyers said:
1. An affidavit is not acceptable in lieu of a marriage certificate because my native country is not such that it doesn't issue marraige certificates.
2. A marriage certificate from an Indian Embassy is acceptable. From my friends I've heard that their lawyers didn't accept. So this may vary lawyer to lawyer.
3. It is ok to get married here.
