I-485 for visa lottery winners?

My girlfriend and her daughter from Tashkent have arrived in the United States finally. I presume that they will need to file the I-485 forms in order to work. The thing is that they will receive their green cards soon through the mail, so I assume that the I-485 is or isn't necessary for work permit?
