Hello Gurus!,

I used a LC substitution with PD of 01/28/1999 and applied for my I-140. I got the approval for I-140 within 2 weeks of filing. Now that I-485 dates are current for my PD, applied I-485/I-131/I-765 for both my wife and I on 01/18/2006. It has been little over 3 weeks since we filed these applications with VSC but till now we have not received receipts numbers from VSC.

I'm little bit nervous about my situation as my friends who filed for I-485 got their receipt numbers within a weeks time and other friend got his EAD approval notice within 2 weeks. I've heard that it might usually take 3 to 5 weeks to receive receipt notices. Is that true? Can I call VSC and somehow findout whether they received my applications?

I'd highly appreciate your prompt responses in this regard.

Check for the RECEIPT NUMBER in your cancelled check

Generally the VSC puts the receipt number on the back of the cancelled check. So check for that if you can.

I have seen cases where it has taken upto 4 weeks to get the Receipt Notice.

Do you mean encahsed check??

Thank you very much for your prompt response. What do you exactly mean by cancelled check? Do you mean encashed check? I keep checking my bank account every day through their online website, I've not seen this check posted/encashed till date. So, shall I just wait for some more time and call VSC about it? Please advice.

no receipts still

It is almost 4 weeks since I filed I-485 still no receipts. Shall I just call VSC and talk to them? I waited enough right?

By the way, I didn't pay any money for this LC. They are getting cut off my bill rate.

During my time it took 1.5 months that was June-July last year

Which address was your packet sent? Did you get the tracking number from your lawyer? If yes, did you a see a delivery exception and then eventually was the packet picked up?

If yes, then at least you can be sure that they received your package. If the checks were correctly made (right amount and split between you and your spouse/dependents), I don't see any reason it won't eventually get cashed. Read this to understand what goes on after they get the package:

How We Process Your Application at a Service Center:

Normal Processing:
The first step is the receipt of mail. Mail is generally opened within twenty-four hours of receipt. The majority of mail arrives on Monday (40%) and Friday (20%). The other three days of the week share an equal amount of mail. Because of the volume of mail arriving on the two busiest days, sending a case via express mail to arrive on either of those days does not ensure faster processing. The lower volumes of mail arriving on Tuesdays means that the mail is usually opened by Tuesday evening.

Applications are stamped with the time and date of physical receipt, not the time and date they are actually opened. Mail with fees enclosed is routed immediately to mail assembly. Cases that are filed prematurely (before the applicant was eligible or met the legal criteria) or that were filed on an outdated form are prepared for manual rejection at this point. Cases lacking proper signature or correct fee are identified for system rejection.

Mail without a fee enclosed is considered correspondence and is sorted by type, if the appropriate destination can be quickly determined. If mailroom personnel are unsure as to the routing, the material is sent to the Customer Contact Services unit where it is read and either responded to or routed to the appropriate division for action.

Properly filed cases and cases flagged for system rejections are then forwarded to the Data Entry unit. In the Data Entry unit, information is keyed into the USCIS computer system and fees processed.

The Data Entry unit collects the appropriate fee or when necessary, rejects the case if the fee is incorrect or the form is not signed. If a case is not clearly acceptable, it is immediately passed to our Case Resolution unit for review. If they are unable to overcome the obstacle to processing, the case is returned to the applicant/petitioner for correction. Receipt or rejection notices are generated during Data Entry and mailed no later than the next morning.

Fee receipts are printed and mailed after the electronic record is created. This means the date on the fee receipt may be different from the date the mail was received for priority date purposes.

Once the fee has been properly receipted and the electronic records created, cases are routed to the Work Distribution unit to await a call for work by the Product Line or Field Office.

If the application will be adjudicated at the Service Center, an Adjudications Officer will review the case; the appropriate data (including cable requests) will be noted on a processing sheet and forwarded with the application/petition to the clerical section. The system is then updated, and the completed application or petition is sent to the file room, consulate or other appropriate office, and original documents are returned as required.

The Center makes every effort to process each application/petition without returning it for further information. Applications that are well prepared take less time to process, thereby facilitating faster processing of all cases. Therefore, to help applicants better prepare cases and applications before sending them to us, please refer to our General Tips on Assembling Applications for Mailing. Following these procedures will help us to serve applicants better and faster.

Here is some more info.

Hi gb04,

Thank you very much for this info. I checked with my lawyer and she confirmed that VSC received my packet by 19th January. Here is the info. from the FedEx tracking number:

Jan 19, 2006 10:40 AM Delivered WILLISTON, VT
9:35 AM Delivery exception WILLISTON, VT
Rerouted to revised delivery address
9:35 AM Held at FedEx location WILLISTON, VT
for recipient pickup
Package available for pickup at:
921 MARSHALL AVE

From the above details, it is confirmed that my package has been successfully delivered to VSC. Coming to my check, it has not been cleared yet. I think this means that they didn't yet opened my package? But I issued a check for the sum of $1490(both my spouse and I). I didn't quite understand the split part though. Please advice.

As I was adviced, there should be a seperate check for each application and applicant. I wrote 7 checks for my 140/485x2/EADx2/APx2 applications. I don't know if this is the rule or just a "best practise". Even if its not a rule, it is good to do that because, days before my lawyer received the receipts, I knew the EAC numbers from looking at the back of the cancelled/cashed check online on my bank site.

Coming back to your situation, if you wrote one lumpsum check for all applicants and applications, that may be delaying the initial processing. And if its a requirement to cut seperate checks, that may even prevent it from being accepted. Anyway, this is total speculation on my part but this is what I am leaning towards. Try and see if you can get more information about this. Good luck!

we got receipts in next day

we have sent our I-485 docs to VSC in lastweek of Jan 2006 and got receipt on with received date feb 1st.

Received receipts/FP appoints and EAD for wife

Finally, both my wife and I received the receipts. We also received FP appointments for both on 03/21 and my wife's EAD got approved. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Thank you very much for everyone who shared their insights.

I see that you sent your 485 applications on Jan-19. When did you actually get receipt notice from VSC? What date exactly?
