I-485: any late-AUG/early-SEPT filers still waiting for check to be cashed?

My friend is getting worried now. He had his AOS application sent on 8/31/07 to Chicago lockbox via USPS Priority. Delivery confirmation shows the package arrived destination on 9/2/07, however his checks still have not been cashed yet as of TODAY - 10/17/07.

It's been 7 weeks - checks are not checked, no NOA, no case number, just nothing!

Anybody in similar situation?
