I-485 & Travel with H1B

1. When returning on H1B after filing I-485 should necessarily 485
    receipt notice be presented to INS Office at POE?

2. Alternatively, can the person on H1B travel outside US after filing
    for I485 before getting receipt notice(Basically is there a dependancy
    on receipt notice if travelling on H1B)
 
My attroney said .....

I applied for I485 on 29th Jan 2002 . I have valid H1B until 2003 but, my attorney suggested me to wait until I get my receipt notice before I leave the country just in case.
 
Is it necessary to produce receipt notice to INS at POE on H1B ?

Thank you. Also is it necessary to produce receipt notice to INS office at POE when returning on H1B.
