I just found out that USCIS needs I-20 as part of application


Any application or petition for an individual currently in F-1 status needs to include evidence the student has been maintaining status and has been authorized employment if applicable. Such evidence usually can be satisfied by submitting the latest Form I-20AB/I-20ID and a copy of the employment authorization card.

The question is that I have the photocopy of my expired I-20 but I lost the original one. How can I get it replaced or What should I do?

Listen, I am in no way a lawyer, but I will give you my take on this because I know that in stressful times every word, even if negative can sometimes be comforting.

I was a student too (check my timeline). My I-20 also expired, I never worked in the US though, my family supported me.

Anyway, since you are in the family based section of the forum, I am guessing you have a USC spouse who will sponsor you, therefore, from what I had read, your current status does not really matter. Whether you maintained status doesn't matter UNLESS you are in fact applying to extend you I-20. Then if you went past 180 days (I beleive): You have a problem.

If family based what you need is I-94 to show proof of legal entry.
If I-94 expiration date says D/S (duration of status) then in the forms that ask for expiration date of I-94 you have to put the I-20 expiration date and you can add in the package a copy of I-20 that shows the date of expiration.

All this is only if you are filing for family based.

Either way, wait for some others to answer, and if possible talk to lawyers on phone using free consultation.

you have to put D/S in the forms, and submit a copy of your latest I-20 form.

Thanks for your Constructus and LucyMo's replies.
I decide to attach the photocopy of I-20 with I-94 copy. And I just called the college to see if they can replace the original expired I-20 so that I can bring it to the interview later. I'm glad that I still keep the copy of I20. Wait and see what will happen then.
