I-131 Travel Permit

Hi ... first of all thanks a lot for the information given by everyone on this board. I am new to this board and need some info. Just got my i-551 stamp on my passport for myself, spouse and son thru family sponsorship.

My question is I will be applying for a travel permit for all 3...due to the fact that my son is in a special High school program course here for another two years and I do not want to disrupt his studies. I know we have to travel to POE to process the final GC, apply for SSN etc etc.

My question is

1. Do I need the actual GC before I can apply or the copy of the I-551 Stamp in the passport is sufficient??

2. Also do we need our SSN before we can apply??

3. Is my sons education a good reason for I-131??

------------------you came with immigrant visa and at POE you gave papers to officer and he toook your signature, Index fingerprint on white form and stamped your Passports. once passports are stamped with A# you are GC holder

---------------------- if you have entred US and got passports stamped at POE (US airport where you entred US with immigrant visa) and officer has taken index Fingerprints and signature on white form then your Green Cards will come to US address in 2-4 weeks time. you dont need to go again to POE for Cards. to apply SSN you need to visit nearest SSA office and apply for SSN
My question is

------------------I think you are applying Reentry permit, it can be for any reason. Reentry Permit need to be applied when you are IN US and file it with NSC. FYI the fee for all the applications with USCIS is going to be increased in 1-2 weeks.

Time for POE

Hi everyone...

we got our immigrant visas last july expires dec 2007. The date is getting closer to enter. We are up in Canada.

The question I have is can we just drive to the nearest border crossing in our car with canadian plates and apply for landed status even though we are not moving completely...will return back in a few days and will return again since we need to apply for re-entry permit for 2 years. Personal reasons for it.
Does one have to move completely to the US to land at POE? Does car crossing make it any different since we still have the car with cdn plates?

Second question...if my spouse decides not to take the greencard at all...does it mean that I cannot get it either? since we got the imm visas as a family or does the whole family has to land for all to get the GC. If I alone land at POE I assume I am the only one who will get it?
