Hypothetical I-485 question

Do I-485's ever get approved without much in the way of checks being done (apart from FP and background check I suppose)?

For example, I-140's are often approved even if someone is unemployed or has moved to a different company as long as no RFE is generated (and sometimes even then).

Are the checks much more stringent at the I-485 level or could someone possibly be approved even if they are, say, unemployed / employed at a totally different job than the one for which the I-140 was done?

Presumably, even if the I-485 is approved though, there could be some issues later on if the USCIS follows up on the case (which I'm assuming is how they catch fraud cases where the employee never works for the sponsoring employer)?

Just curious...

GC is for future employment

GC is for future employment.
Also AC21 allows to change employers after 6 months.
Number of employment related RFE's is about 20% of all the cases, so most likely you will never receive one. And also there are some rumors that nuber of emp RFEs will be reduced.
Never heard of USCIS verifying employment history after approval.

Right -- and my question was really whether / how often this future employment is confirmed at the I-485 stage. Sounds like not very...?

Obviously if you qualify for AC21 and use it to switch to a qualifying job there's no issue (apart from that of leaving the job within < 6 months).

So when you say only 20% of cases receive RFEs does this imply that 80% of people could be doing nothing / selling hotdogs at the local ballpark and still get their GC?

A concern that I'm sure a lot of people have is that of being laid off, say, the week before they adjucate the I-485 with no time to find a new (similar) job.

Don't worry!

The worst case scenario is that they issue Notice Of Intend Of Deny. This happens only if your emp-er is a#$hole and revoked I140. Even in this case you have 30 days to come up with something.

In case of RFE you have 90 days to respond. In the current economy one can easily find a job in this time frame and even has a chance to lose it agailn:D

So actually 100% of pepople can sell hotdogs, provided they can respond in time frames given above.

In my body shopping company I know of atleast 4 people who do desk jobs like recruitment, HR admin etc who have GCs that the company got by showing them as Software Programmers ... So it is entirely possible and always happens. Unless USCIS has a interview system for each candidate who wants to immigrate (like Consular Processing), people will misuse the I485 backdoor.
