Israeli goes on hunger strike for Green Card

Rami Scharf has faced years of unexplained delay in obtaining green card status
Yitzhak Benhorin

WASHINGTON - Dr. Rami Scharf, an Israeli biologist living in a Washington D.C. suburb since 1998, has launched a hunger strike because of foot-dragging over receiving a Green Card for which he has been waiting for five years.

Scharf, 43, of Haifa, is married and father of three children aged 10 – 18, and works for American company in Virginia which supplies services to the US's National Cancer Research Institute.

Recounting his long and still incomplete journey to receive a Green Card, Scharf said that "the request was first stuck for three years in the Department of Labor until a work permit was granted. Only after three years, the file was transferred to the Department of Immigration."

"Despite repeated requests, I was not given an answer why it was stuck," he added.

After turning to the representative of the House of Representatives Chris Van Hollen, his aides checked the issue and in 2005 the request was transferred to the final stage of status change process. This stage should have taken a number of weeks. It is a technical stage only, but it has been going on for six months.

"In principle this can be delayed forever. Therefore I have no other way to protest other than going on hunger strike," Scharf said.

In a letter to Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff, Scharf said: "We live and work in a legal manner in the United States since 1998 as law-abiding residents, contribute to the economy and American society. I believe we deserve better and faster treatment from the department you head."

Can we do mass hunger strikes?? is it Legal Here ?

Why not? if you don't want to eat, who can stop you?

Better still, try a nationwide "A day without Indians". All legal Indians don't work for a day. That'll raise awareness towards legal immigration.

"He's gonna starve".

And dig our own grave....

And defenitely not "An Israeli Arab"... I'd monitor this closely. Most probably nothing will happen - USCIS will not create a case.

We have to commend this man for his attempt. Good work. He definitely gained some media attention by doing this.

That's what I am pointing!!

We can schedule some mass hunger strikes during week ends(one saturday and sunday) or on JULY 4th at different Places across USA to get attention!!

That's a political suicide. Believe me, strikes, protests, etc that doesn't work in this atmosphere.

If we have a brave squad of hunger strikers that yes, that appears to make more sense.

IV core members could take the lead to organize this ? (just kidding)

I didn't think it needed to be spelled out, but suicide is illegal. Not eating tends to lead to not breathing.

If you're going to do a hunger strike, do it right. Don't eat at all... why just do it as a weekend hobby?

:D

I didn't think it needed to be spelled out either. But you're on hunger not to kill yourself, but to draw attention to your suffering.

I hear ya man... I just don't think that a weekend strike will bring anything to the table.

har har :)

Good luck with that though.

Indefinite hunger strike - way to go :) Solves multifold purpose. Lose extra pounds, get media attention, get Green card, enter the history books :) :)

I see anguish ...

Guys and Gals,

We can all identify with this guy although he has taken an extreme step. I can feel the frustration and anguish that has led him to this point because I go through it myself. I personally won't go on hunger strike but I can see how someone can be be pushed to that point. Sadly, none of this will make any difference. Now if this guy had a few million bucks to invest in the US, the GC would be handed to him immediately.

regards,

saras

I do agree with marlon2006. Personally I feel that It is not worth to go such extremes.

And as saras76 pointed it out correctly, all need to see his frustration. It may not make much difference but I wish that his hunger strike should make few lawmakers and media to see the plight of law abiding immigrants.
