How will I be treated when I try to leave?

I'm a Scottish tourist in the USA and I've overstayed my visa waiver by almost 4 months. I now need to return home but I'm concerned about the process of doing so, especially the reception I might face at the airport, the possibility of detention, painful body cavity searches, having to fly home in the custody of an air marshal.

Does anyone know if any of these things are likely and if so, could you advise me what other options do I have?

A bit of background: I overstayed after letting my original return flight slip and then finding I couldn't afford another one as prices soared.

None of those could be the case.
However, next time you will most likely not be allowed on visa waiver. You will need a visa.

Nothing will happen when you leaving US. However, since you have over stayed, as raevsky stated, you will no long be eligible for visa waiver program, and most likely, your visa application will be denied for the next 5 years. If you over stayed more than 180 days, it will be an automatic ban on your admission to US for 10 years.
