What difference can an attorney make? I am new to this process. How can a good attorney help my case?

Can he speed up the INS process?

It depends on how complicated is your case.

If everything is already lined up, they just take an hour to fillup the forms and enjoy the couple of thounsand dollars you paid.

If you substitued labor, had mismatch degree title, not enough experience, recently changed to a crappy employer and about to be laid off, then you really get your money worth

A poorly submitted and documented case will draw an RFE and cause delays and a possible denial. A clearly detailed and submitted case will limit (I've seen RFEs even on the best documented cases where there really were no issues) the probability of an RFE. It's one of those things where a poor attorney sometimes really needs to earn the money that they are paid since they have to answer RFEs that a superior attorney may have been able to foresee, document properly and avoid.

I've seen cases denied that would have been approved had they been documented and submitted properly. I've seen individuals do great jobs with their submissions and I've seen attorneys submit absolute garbage that was almost asking INS for a denial. Competent representation certainly helps in most cases, and even where you don't need it it's sort of like an insurance policy.

Of course, I'm biased!

You are absolutely right about what a difference a good lawyer can make. But sometime, people either didn't have the luxry to choose or and didn't do their homework out of ignorance.

Like my first LC still pending since 98. I was told the guy was company's designated lawyer, best in town, 4 times faster than average(?!), wrote about 2 feet thick immigration guidelines ... It turns out he never did any immigration before :o
