Hi there,
One of my friends would like to change his full name. He is from south India where he has his father name as last name. He gets in to lot of problems confusions since his full name doesn’t fit in his credit card and most of the places.
For example: (dummy name)
Present full name: Sriharikrishnan Venkatachalamoorthy
Like to change to: Srihari Krishnan

Spouse name: Roopa Mohanasundaram
Like to change to: Roopa Krishnan

He is planning to change his name but didn’t know the procedure. It was interesting and I thought I would post it here to see if anyone has the same problem and changed his or her full name.

What is the procedure to change his first name and last name of his wife at the same time?

Much appreciated.

I am also interested in this subject. Anybody out there with a similar experience????
I know it is a hastle...you've to update your name from passport to SSN to green card to utility bills to credit card to banks to...and also carry the name change letter for some time.

Well, I dont know how to change the name. But I am sure that this is not going to be an easy task like changing the name plate. Think about the mess, he is going to create for the rest of his life. Not just here in US but back in India too. Think about the work he has to do (not including the consequnces) starting from applying/changing his SSN, Credit History, DL, Passport, Credit Cards, Bank Accounts, Certificates. Well, it is like re writing his whole life.

All this hassle, just to make his name to fit on some credit cards or whatever.
Not to discourage him...but I will say forget about it.

I too have a long name. But I have to live with it.

Wow!!! someone trying to change their name because it would not fit on credit card :)

When you apply for credit card, you can always choose how do you want your name appear on credit card. There you can give what ever the name you want like Mr.<Last Name> or <first letter of firstname> <Last name> or just first name.

I would not suggest you changing names because it would not fit on credit card. Your name is your name what ever it is.....

But more importantly, it's going to be an hassle explaining every where why you have changed your name and if you say....it's too long....they will just laugh at you.

Just because we could not pass through a small door, does not mean that we need to take our head off -- my 2cents

Like usnycus said, you would need a court form petition to file for changing your name. At the court, you have to tell them why you want to change your name. According to the federal law, you cannot change your name on your bills (electricity, gas, etc) unless you are granted by the court. It is fraud to alter any name on any document.

After granted by the court, you can show it to customer service of credit cards, gas/electricity, cable tv, etc. then you can show it to your embassy to change your name on your passport.

Thanks a lot for all the information. I know it is gonna be a hassle to do it, but I heard that it is very easy to change your name here in US compared to in India. Or at least that was my impression.

This change is not just to fit the name in the credit card. His real problem is that even in his driving license his name is like "Sriharikrishnan Venkatachalamoo" because of 15 char limitation in the DMV computers.

Anyways I will pass this on to him.. Appreciate your help/ opinions/ comments.
