how to take my money with me ?

Hi every one ..

I have got the visa (DV2008) and I am going to go to USA soon.
And I was wandering about the life there and how much of money I will need for the first six months.

And the most important question is how to take my money with me (cash, traveler's check or any other ways).

I heard that I can't take more than 10,000 with me, is it true?

I appreciate your help and thank you for your help in advance.
 
Although I now live here, I still earn my money mainly in UK Pounds. I then use XE.com to transfer the money each month (or whenever I need more) over to the USA. You get a much better exchange rate than going via a bank or other exchange companies.

It's all done online and there are no fees, and no real limit to the amount you can transfer.

The downside is you must have the account in the US already set up. Other people I know come over here with enough money for a few weeks. Then set up an account as soon as you arrive, then use xe.com to transfer the the money from home county to USA account.

From initiating a transfer to it arriving in to your USA account takes around 5-6 business days.

I have a friend in Virginia, where I am going to life for a while and I was wandering what the life is there, how much it cost to rent a room or a car.

I opened some US accounts pre-9/11 from the UK, all by telephone and mail (for the signatures). Since 9/11 my bank has not allowed this, and I suspect other banks are the same, but not cetain on that.
