How to maintain GC status

What is the maximum time allowed for a GC holder to stay outside of US?

I heard 2 answers:

1. The GC holder must come to stay in US at least 6 months each year
2. The GC holder must come to US once a year

The second answer apparently doesn't have requirement for how long
to staty in US, only require to come every year. Does anybody know which
one is correct?
 
yes, I know the answer. A GC holder must live permanently in the U.S., but he is allowed to take short trips abroad for up to a year in length (two if you have a reentry permit and some really imporant circumstances). If you take such trips every year, after two or three an immigration officer at POE starts asking questions, and if he doesn't like the answers, he has the discretion to take your GC away and rid you of your permanent resident status.
