i am a doctor coming to the united states for my exam as well as interviews on a b1/2 visa.
i want to make sure i get a six month stay in the u s because i wont be able to finish all my interviews until then.
is there anyway i can ensure this. i want to be fully prepared from my side.

what is the first thing you say when the immigration officer asks u how long u want to stay?i heard people who say six never get it.
secondly do i need to carry an I 134 affidavit of support, or will they trust me if i say my relative is there?
thanks

show him your return ticket and state the purpose of your visit. Have enough supporting documents to back you up. What exam and interviews are these?

It is a random thing. I have gone through POEs more than 20 times and sometimes I am just passing through in my way to another country for 1 night stay and they give me 6 months. Sometimes I need 2 months and they have sent me to secondary inspection.

Move Along,
There is no way you can guarantee an I-94 granting you six months. Just abide by the following rules when dealing with the inspector at the POE:-

(1) Do not lie
(2) Do not volunteer any information

If you intend to stay six months, tell the officer "six months" if questioned. Good luck!!!

hello and thanks for the replies...quick and precise....

i did not understand what u mean by do not volunteer any information..do you mean i should only answer questions asked and not give extra information?
here is a slightly better background before my further questions_
i am a doctor , going to the us for qualifiyingexams and then interviews in all the hospitals for the national residency match program. i am staying with my sister who is on a j1 in IN and with my uncle who is a citizen in NY. i have my I134 from my uncle. However i am travelling straight from NY my POE to IN to meet my sister and give my exam from there. after that i plan to go to NY( i dont have a ticket for that)

FOUR QUESTIONS-
1) will the immigration officer question my going to IN when i ve my sponsor in NY ( and the fact that i havent booked my IN to NY ticket as yet)?
2) should i buy a ticket to NY in advance to be on safe side( they always demand to see ticket right)
3) does this sound like a valid explanation for a six month stay/?
that i plan to give my exam(mid july), then go and stay with my uncle for vacation ( aug, sept)as well as going for interveiws to many hospitals in NY( which will be in monhts of oct,nov,dec)_ , and then go back to indiana to my sisters to celebrate christmas and NEw years....
documents i am carrying---examination proof, I 134, the NRMP match program schedule which shows the interview process.

4) is there a difference when it comes to six month stay on b1 or b2 ...i mean is six month stay easier on b2 than b1?

sorry for the long query and thank u for your patience

Yes by "do not volunteer" I meant exactly that, do not given any extra information that is not asked for.

A1: Not an issue since B-2 visas DO NOT have sponsors, contrary to popular belief
A2: The tickets the inspector would be interested in would be your international ticket out of the US
A3: Sounds like a plan. Not to sound like a school teacher, but you TAKE an exam, not GIVE it :)
A4: You will get six months if the officer wants to give you six months. B-1 or B-2 visa only lets you approach an officer and request admission into the US.

Good luck and have a plesant stay!!!

hello again and thanks for the prompt reply...

the questions never stop.....sorry!

1) i was denied b2 stay for six months in jan 07 ( given 3 months) coz i couldnt show support. u think the I 134 is not helpful at all for b2.?
2)if i get three months ( hopefully not) and i apply for a three month extension ...what are the chances of my application being approved taking my reasons for extension into consideration.?
3)if i get a six month stay and i want a fifteen day extension , can i stay the time till my application is approved ....( i heard it takes 2 months for approval)sot hat means if i ve to back on 6 jan and i apply on 4 jan i can stay till feb ( or the time my application is approved)officially...at no cost i want to break the law ...coz i m going to be back on a J1 or H1 in july.?
4)how does canada help in extension? can i take a canadian visa and fly there toward s the end of my stay and come back witha month more?

sorry again and thanks for ur patience
excuse my english....the materia medica have made all my learned skills weak ......
