How to check status online

I know this is a stupid/simple question for everybody but I have to ask.

I sent my application today to USCIS, from NJ.

How do you check status of your application online with USCIS?

Naturally I will know when it was received, since I sent it via UPS. I will also be able to check online when they extract the money from the account. According to the form, they need the check for the account number and will transfer the money electronically and will keep the check only for records. So I can track that.

Thanks in advance again.:D

You will need a case # to check the status online.

Case number will be on the notice from USCIS you will receive in the coming days.

yankees,
I am not trying to put a damper on your enthusiasm, but the on-line status updates are not always consistent nor reliable. The name of this game is called patience.

You will be receiving the NOA notice within 2 weeks time. Your file will be assigned with a case number (format: NBC*#########). You can goto USCIS web site and check your status online using this number (do not ignore '*', you have to enter everything).

As others have mentioned the USCIS web site status update is not reliable and it is not up to date. If you think that there is a delay (the process is taking more time than usual - check for others' timeline), you can always call the customer service number.

Thank you

Thank you for the great responses. I know I can rely on this website for fast answers.

I was looking at some of the signatures that everyone has, and what is the difference between Priority Date and Notice Date?

Thanks again

Priority date is the date the application was received by USCIS and entered into their system. Your notice (NOA) will have this date printed on it. Notice date is the date on which the NOA was issued/sent out.

Even when you get the NBC number, do not put too much faith in the online system. Mine is showing the "Last update" as the middle of May just after I applied. I did the Oath last week and I have been a USC for almost a week. :D :D

Online still shows the application to be at the NBC.

Thanks Guys

Thank you for all the information - I will take your recommendations and not bank on it.
