How To Check Status Online

This is going to sound very basic (and it is) and a little embarrassing that I don't know this (which it also is), but...

HOW DO YOU CHECK THE STATUS OF THE WHOLE APPLICATION ONLINE?

So far, I can check the status of my I-140 based on my EAD number (from the approval form) BUT I am wondering if there is a way to check the whole application. For example, I mailed my I-485 in June. How do I track its receipt?
Would it show up if I use the EAD number in the online status checker? Is there another application number that I should be using?

Please, help!!!!!!!
 
Case Status Portfolio with Updates via E-mail

Each of your applications (I-140, I-485, I-131, I-765) will have a separate receipt number (case#) which you can find on the receipt notice.
Create a customer portfolio in the following link https://egov.uscis.gov/cris/jsps/index.jsp
Add the case # to your portfolio and turn e-mail on option to get e-mail updates.
 
Lud for I-140

My I-140 was approved in November 2005. Checked my status on line and Lud was changed to 07/22/07.
PD: July 03.
