Hello,

Does any one has idea about last name change.
I applied my GC and wife already. I am waiting for approval.
I didn't change her last name still. I want to change her last name after approval. Now i cann't do anything.

What is the process to change last name. How to do.
Does i get any difficulties while changing last name.

Any help will be appreciated.

I don't know how to go about doing this, but I would like to ask you a question.
Why do you want her to change her name? It doesn't matter - it is just a name. She should be able to keep hers.

I have recently discovered that by law, you can give your children first and/or last names that are completely different from what you/your family had.

Please don't flame me. I just pose this question as I think times have changed enough that we should question this 'post-marriage-name-change' practice.

Once again I wouldn't know how to change names. Sorry if my question bothers you

to lamborghini

I agree with you partially. Last name may not mean much to the individuals but it sure is simple to use if all your family has same last name. In many cases you have to give additional explanation that you are married. e.g. If using tickets on reward miles they treat it as a different passenger and you have to be there in person during checkin.

Sorry I do not know about name change. But I am interested in this answer as well.

First, the passport has to be send to the Embassy/Consulate here in the US. For that, check the web site of the Embassy/Consulate of your country of citizenship. For eg: For Indians, go to www.indiacgny.org for all the info. It cost $20 or so. Name change due to marriage is easy. Send all documents as per their requirements. For Indian passport holders, they require the husband's passport and original marriage certificate.

Once the new passport is received, go to Social Security Office with the wife's current SS card, new passport and marriage documents and submit the form for SSN. SS card with new name comes in 2 weeks.

Hope this info helps.

I agree with lamborghini

I totally agree with lamborghini. Just changing the name doesn't make any difference.

I really dont want to change my wife's last name :) However I am inetrested in knowing how one can do it ?

As for as I know... in the marriage certificate (one u get from the subregistrar office in India) You cant change the name once they give u a certificate. Thats what I have been told. If u want ur wifes name to be changed then u have to change it at that time.

I dont know the rest, but I am interested in finding out

I filed the 485 with my wife's married name on the forms and during the process, changed the passport and SS card.

I checked with the lawyer and he advised me to do so then cause it's a whole lot easier to do it during the 485 process than after the GC approval. For GC name change, search the INS website at www.ins.usdoj.gov

The school records all show the maiden name and thats OK. Its the passport, SSN and GC that counts.
