How to cancel H1 visa?

I recently returned to India at end of my H1 job. If I have to cancel my H1 visa IMMEDIATELY, is it enough for me to SEND A REGISTERED LETTER TO INS? Or is only my employer supposed to request INS for withdrawal? I hear that employer normally avoid withdrawing H1 visas and then INS itself takes 3-4 months!
Basically it\'s enough for me if INS at least records in their system based on my letter that my visa status has ended on the date. For that, do they need additional proof of end of my job?

If you are worried about starting the one year counter (to become eligible for another fresh bout of 6 yr of H1) then all you need is the exit date from US or entry date into India.
Yes, Most of the time, employers cancel the visa and INS does not update the system until 6 months or so.
Your registered letter will be promptly lost on the sea of INS.

Do i need to go India to do H-1 to H-4 transfer.

I came to US on H4 Visa( my husband is on H-1). In Aug 2001 a company applied for a H1-B Visa for me. The H1 got approved in December 2001. But now the company cant take me anymore as they dont have projects. I did not get into their pay roll as yet. They want me to change my status from H-1 to H-4 and they want me to go to India and do it. My husband has changed jobs. So the H-4 stamped on my passport is from old company.

1. Do i need to go to India for getting H-4 stamped.

2. Will i have any problem in coming back to US. Is there a possibility of being rejected.

3. What paper work do i have to take.
