It takes 5-6 years to have visa number availble.
So don\'t do anything to waste your energy and money.
Instead, apply for your cizenship in 4 years and 9
months, be natualizedm then apply for your wife\'s
visa.

I disagree, there could be legislations like V Visa which could come by again and last time it came, it required a wait time of 3 years.

So just to be in the safe side, just filing a I130 would not be so bad.The person could get lucky and bring his wife after 3 years or else he will miss the bus.

zorro, if you work for an American company with branches in India, you could get transfered there and still maintain PR status.
else, you could try to persuade your wife to apply for a H1 or L1 if she qualifies.

2-year re-entry permit

If you stay outside of US for more than 1 year, you need
to get a re-entry permit before you leave US. The permit
is good for 2 years and there is no guarantee that you
can renew it. Even if you get the renewal, it is usually
only good for one year.

no time limits for N470

hi hopeful, there are no time limits if you file a N470 which is an "Application to Preserve Residence for Naturalization Purposes". since a person is working abroad to preserve the interests of an american corporation and hence the american economy, there is a waiver for all the time spent abroad. http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/formsfee/forms/n-470.htm

You may be confusing the 470 with the re-entry permit. Re-entry permit has a limit of 2 years and the time spent abroad is not counted for the citizenship. you have to reset your time clock for citizenship and restart 5 year residency count after using the re-entry permit.
