How soon tourist visa can be renewed ?

Hi,

My in-laws have a 5 years tourist visa which is expiring in first week of Feb, 2010.
We are planning to invite them from Dec'09 end thru to April, 2010.

My questions are as follows:

1). How soon before the expiry of current tourist visa can they apply for renewal of tourist visa?

2). Are there other options ? For example - apply for renewal here in the US. Will this impact future visa renewals ?

A1: 3 months should be okay
A2: Visas cannot be renewed in the US

Thank you for replying. I have heard people filing for extension once they are in the US . Is that an option as well or it can be completely ruled out ?

Visa extension and extension of status are two very different beasts. EOS is only done inside the US and the former outside the US.
