I hot my green card 10.02.2010. it is an employee based green card. I have been reading forums and there are a lot of comments... some says better wait at least 6 months and some say you can quit right away.

I have been working real hard past few years, and feeling exhausted... bottom line is I want to take some time off and do some part time freelance works. probably will be making less money than i do now.

first: do i have to work full time?
second: how soon can i quit?

thanks in advance.

thank you for the answer Jack.

from my understanding the problem occurs when it comes to apply citizenship. so the officer may think "you left your job... it could be fake job or something..." this might possibly cause a problem.

so if I dont apply citizenship right after first 5 years, it shouldnt be any problem because they look for last 5 year history, is that right?

and second question no matter I do, either i work for sponsoring company or not they can not take my green card, and I can stay as a green card holder all my life, right? (what do I need to renew my green card? after 10 years)

thanks

The form only asks for 5 years of job history, but the interviewer has the right to ask for more. However, that usually doesn't happen ... they're not going to do that unless they see a red flag somewhere, or they're just in a bad mood and feel like overquestioning people.

They might investigate your employment history and challenge the validity of your green card outside of the citizenship process if you're involved in another immigration process, such as if you're filing an I-130 to sponsor a relative for a green card.

Yes, you can keep on renewing your green card every 10 years for the rest of your life without ever applying for citizenship. Form I-90 is used to renew the card (although in 10 years it could be something different).

You've already worked for the employer for 3 months after green card approval, and soon it will be 4 months. I presume you also worked for them for months or years before the GC. So just make sure to keep your W-2's and other evidence of working for them, and it's highly unlikely you'll have a problem if you leave soon. We just can't say with 100% certainty that it's safe to leave now, because the courts haven't ruled on any specific limits.
