How soon can I change employers after my GC ?

I agree with Lucky65, I was afraid of Consular processing, so filed I-485 and am stuck with it. My friend (a risk taker) filed I-140 after me, and chose Consular processing, and he got his plastic 4 months ago.

BTW, how long can I stay on GC, and not file for Citizenship? For how long is the first GC valid for? Whats the procedure for renewing GC? (A bit too early since am still waiting on 485)

I am facing the "no risk , no reward" option. I could stay with my current employer or move on & get a "significant" raise. I know some folks who switched employers within 2 weeks of their I-485 approval. They had no problems during their naturalization. As regards intent , the intent was always there ; I waited almost 2 years in the I-485 stage. Who knows , in the future I might work for my petitioning company again.

For those of you who are in favor of being on the conservative side , i.e. recommend staying with the current employer, could you play Devil's Advocate and give me concrete evidence to back your stand. This exercise will be helpful to all of us. I shall talk to my attorney too and get his views on this matter. Will keep you guys posted.

Spoke to an immigration specialist. She told me that there should be no problems in switching employers as long as you have a "similar" job description.

Thats too bad .. because after spending so many hours on this website , I was planning to leave my job and start an immigration firm !!

you are fine. There is obviously no fraud intention in your case as this is an involuntary transition. Just keep a good record of any document you may have.

No one cares about job change

I checked the lawyer in our univ. about six-month requirement for changing job after GC. She said that there was no such law at all and she has noticed many people left their jobs right after their GC was approved. Who cares? Those who care about this may lose a lot of their opportunities.
