hello,

how soon after your approval notice do you get a stamp in your passport and how long after that do you get the actual green card.

It is better to get stamped as soon as possible. So that You can get your cards also fast. Now a days it looks like you will card in 8 to 12 weeks after stamping.
 
Normally local INS offices have some day alloted for stamping (in Newark, its Wednesday 8am to Noon).

After you get the approval notice, you can technically go on the alloted day for stamping to ur local INS office...
 
you dont even need the 'original' letter of approval that goes to your attorney - you can just use the courtesy copy you receive in the mail.
