How relevant is PP stamping?

How relevant is PP Stamping. Once you receive your I485 approval, you
are a GC holder. Isn\'t it true? You can just wait for your plastic card
in mail. I am sure I am missing some info, otherwise people wouldn\'t go
and stand in lines at 2:00am to get their PP stamped.

When you get your approval, you need to go to the local INS office and give them your photos, finger-print and signature to make the plastic card. At this time you\'ll get a stamp on your passport which will be valid for 1 year.

Passport stamping is necessary if a case is approved directly (i.e.,
no interview). They need to collect photos and signatures to process
plastic card. If you don\'t go for stamping, your card will never
arrive.
