In thread on this forum it says take 4, but why so many? When you send N-400 you include 2 pics. Even if IO will not like those you need only 2 to replace "bad" ones. Why do you need to take 4 pics, please explain?

Infact you dont need any photos but safe to carry 2 photos (incase INS loose them)

Reason why many suggested 4 photos is, that you might need 2 photos for US Passport and additional photos for your origin country visa. For India visa, requirement are 4 photos.

I understand reason behind taking 2 photos, but 4 is over the top, in opinion any way. Maybe there is some secret reason in that, that I am not aware of. If any body knows it, please let me know because I don't want to go unprepared.

There's no secret reason for taking 4 photos, unless the IO takes a fancy to you and wants two for himself/herself.

They do lose stuff. Take 2 to the interview and 2 to the oath ceremony just in case. They lost mine (the signed ones) between interview and making the certificate. However, they did call me and told me to bring 2 photos to oath ceremony. But to be well prepared ..... bring then anyway.

The spares can be used for passport application :)
