How often do people bring a lawyer along for the interview at the local center for EB cases? Is it better to have him there? They want $700 to come to the interview with us.

Man your lawyer is pricey.

My Lawyer is coming for my interview and she is not charging me anything.

$700 is reasonable

Here, for most Civil Action case appearances(say, Divorce, Separation Orders, etc.), the attorneys charge a flat rate of a minimum of $750. Going by that rate, your attorney has charged you a reasonable rate of $700 for attending the interview with you. However, usually the attorney's presence is more of a morale-booster than anything else.

I think I might take him along. I have a tendancy of saying the wrong things at the wrong time, especially when I'm nervous.

Depends on your confidence level. If your I485 is simple (no job change or AC21 with same job profile), probably you don't want to pay your laywer that much. In this kind of cases, there is nothing that your lawyer can answer, but you cannot. Even if your answer wrong, that cannot be basis for denials. I-485 cannot be denied directly - first USCIS needs to send notice for intend of denial. In most of the interview, officer hardly ask any complicated questions - they mainly check all original documents, certificates, marriage pictures.
On the other hand, if your I485 is complicated - like you were out of status for long period of time or your salary level is much lower than LC salary or you have too many AC21 in past few years or your employer refused to provide company tax returns - in that kind of scenario it makes sense to take attorney with you.

CuriousGeorge,

If your case is straight forward (no job change or out of status issues for you or your dependents, I don't think you need to use a lawyer.

Just ensure that you take all possible documentation including all your tax returns though they typically ask for just the last 3 years returns.

In my case, the officer asked me to prove that my wife and I were still STAYING together .... house agreement, birth certficate of our recently born child , car insurance were some of the possible proofs.

Anyways, goodluck !

did not bring a lawyer for my interview

Hi,

I went my interview alone based on what my attorney suggested and at my own will. I just felt more comfortable with me being at the interview by myself. I assume that the officer does not mind at all interviewing you with your attorney being around. Showing up alone sort of gives a message that you are confident enough about your case. The interview turned out pretty smooth.
