How many days of I-140 pending to be in status after L1 expires ?

How many days/months does the I-140 have to be pending with INS in order for me to be in legal status in the US even after my L1 expires ? My 7-years of L1 expires in Dec 2007.

Is it just the I-140 that has to be pending for "x" days or is it the I-485 also?

A pending or approved I-140 never gives any legal status in the US. Only an I-485 does so.

How many days does the I485 have to be pending to allow me to stay in status after my L1 expires. I believe it is 180 days. Am I right?

So I can file I-140 & I-485 concurrently and after 180 days I am safely in 'adjustee' status ?

Thanks for your response.

The I-485 keeps you in legal status the day it's filed.

I think, more exactly, not the day it is filed, but the day USCIS received it and issues receipt ('receipt date', or 'notice date'), which depends on how did you mail your I-485, and is few days later than 'filing date'....

The filing date I refer to is the date that USCIS physically receives the filing. If they take several days or weeks (as in my case) to generate the receipt, that's their problem - but you are in legal status during that time.
