I sent out the reference draft letters three weeks ago, but some of them do not respond at all, although they previously agreed. What should I do? So how long do you guys get all your reference letters signed?

No Title

What do you mean about reference letter drafts? I thought the person signing the letter is supposed to draft it as well. Anyway, the response time varies from person to person, so how should anyone on this forum know what\'s in your references mind?

check with them

Hi,
I\'ve had good experience with my recommenders. They all asked
me when I need the letter back, I told them the date, they
happily send it back in every case ... Maybe that person simply forgot
this thing...check with them...

About draft

All of my recommenders ask me providing a draft letter. That is, I write the recommendation letter myself and I send them. If it is OK for them, they can dirrectly sign the letters and if not, they can modify easily based on my draft.

My current problem is that two important recommenders haven\'t responded my request yet even I\'ve sent them several emails. Just don\'t know what to do

Be aggressive

Give them a call. Be aggressive. Maybe it\'s buried under a pile of stuff and they forgot about it. Remind them that they made a commitment. BTW, my boss did the same thing to me. Constant reminders are a good thing.

Here is my experience

I requested over 10 letters and only one took more than 3 weeks. I drafted all letters. The recommender usually changes a couple of sentences.

It took my advisor more than 3 months to sign my NIW letter though I called him more than 10 times and reminded him face to face many times. He returned my EB1-OR letter in one month BUT changed all glowing words and strong languages in the letter. I simply threw it into the trash can. I got my EB1-OR approval without his letter. You do not have to get the letter from your advisor!!!

Most of people are very very nice. I even got letters from famous professors I have never met and talked to. Several email exchanges solved all problems.

my situtation

My situation is that my advisor and dept chair are very quick: I receieved their signed letters in 3 days after I sent them the drafts! But as you know, their letters do not weigh much. My most important reference is a Sr. Scientist from a National Lab. He immediately said "yes" when I asked him for reference, but now I\'ve been a month after I sent him the draft and I haven\'t had any response from him yet. I also called him, never got a chance to talk and I\'m planning to send him an email again. I know he must be very busy, but just don\'t know if there is a good way to push him...

Push

Pushing hard is how things get done in America. Get used to it. If he won\'t do it, find somebody else. Ten letters are not necessary...I got mine done with five.

On the subject of letters, one of my colleagues had contacted a well known figure in the field for a letter for his NIW. After the draft letter was sent, my friend received an E-mail from the person encouraging him to buy his latest book (price of $250). The book was never purchased and the letter was never received.
