How long should the passport be valid for....?

I am a GC Holder(already have the card). I am planning to visit India in Feb and hope to be back in March. My passport is expiring in June 2002.
My question is - at the time I re-enter US, my passport has a life of only 3 more months? Is this OK? Of course, I plan to extend it as soon as I get back?

Do you foresee any glitches either here or in India?

Thanks a million in advance for your response.

I think it is OK as long as it is valid at the moment.
Otherwise what is the point of expiration date if the real
one should be earlier?

Depends where you are going

Going to India should be fine, but most countries require that the foreign nationals\' passport be valid for at least 6 months after the date of departure. I know because I\'ll be travelling to Europe in March and I had to renew my passport . My old one was to expire in June, but no country would give me a visa till I renewed my passport.

Thanks but.......

I understand that almost all of the countries(including US) insist that the passport be valid for more than 6 months for the issuance of a Visa.

But in my case, as I already have the card and don\'t foresee the need for any visa, I am assuming that it is safe to travel on the current passport and change it once I get back.

Piece of Advise!

It\'s better to renew it before you leave the country. I agree with other members as they stated that you should have atleast 6 months valid visa while travelling overseas, but I am not sure that if it applies to green card holders. If wanna be on safeside, you still have time to send it to Indian consulate in Chicago or New York to renew it. Usually, they take 5 to 10 days to renew and send you new passport.

REMEMBER! You are supposed to carry both old and new passports while travelling overseas!

Hope it helps!

6 months is required before the issuance of visa but if you
once get the visa, you can use it on the last day your passport
is valid (assumeing the visa outlive your passport).

So I do not see any problem with the original
poster.
