How long can one wait for filing I-485 , after approval of I-140

Hello,

One of my friend got his I-140 approved in January 2002. He is not married yet . He and his family is looking for a suitable match for him . He is worried about filing I-485. He wants to get married before filing I-485.
He questioned me , how long can he wait for filing I-485 . And also , if he files I-485 (provided the date is current), what is the latest time to add spouse to the application so that she may also get green card along with him .

I140 is forever, but...

the processing times are not getting faster. Unless your friend lives under CSC jurisdiction, it would be advisable to file I485 and start looking for the wife.
A wife can be added to the 485 process up and until the approval. If your friend gets married at the earlier stages and your friend is in valid work status (h1 or l1) he can bring his spouse in H4/L2 and then add his spouse\'s application.
If it is in the final stage or nearer to approval (i.e. after FP etc.) all he has to do is get married before the date of approval. He can still do CP for his spouse based on his approval.
