How long can I stay outside US

I am outside US trying up treatments for my serious illness. Now it appears that I will not be able to travel for the next several months? How long can I stay outside US without losing the validity of my green card?

I think upto 6 months outside the US.
 
does any one knows of other medical exceptions

I know the standard rule is 6 month and with REENTRY Permit it is 2 yrs.

BUT Are there any MEDICAL EXCEPTION possible in any such situations/

Can experienced members can shed light on this issue
