How long can husband leave US B4 losing GC?

I'm a US citizen. My husband is a permanent resident through marriage. We're considering moving to his home in England for a few years after we retire. How long can he be out of the US before he loses his Green Card? If we stay out past that time, do we have to go through the whole immigration thing again when we move back? Is the only way around this to have him become a US citizen before we leave?
