How Long Can a Green Card Holder Stay Out of U.S.

Like you all know, I got approved recently. But I have to travel back to China to take care of my family business for the next 3 or 4 years. I will not like to lose my Green Card and infact I will like to apply for citzenship after 5 years.

1. As a green card holder, how often do I need to come into the USA in order for me to remain as a resident?

2. Are there any special arrangements I can make before leaving?

3. Do I need to show proof that I am paying taxes in order to qualify for citzenship in 5 years.

4. I will like you guys (Poon, Jaxen, et al) to help me with any insights that you may have. Please.

Thanks to you all.

In theory you can be out of US for just a day and considered to have abandoned your G.C., but I think that may never have happened to anyone.

I guess the new guidelines say that majority of the time, in any given year, should be spend inside US, for that year to be counted towards the citizenship eligibility.

There are things like re-entry permit that you may find useful to know more about. Also I heard that if you are deployed to another country as a US expat your time outside US will still be counted as you were here.

Good luck!

Also, in light of the ever changing US immigration landscape, you should always keep yourself informed about any memos, rules, law changes affecting PR at least until you get the citizenship.
