How late one can apply for AP renewal ?

My wife's AP is going to expire in another week. Do we need to apply for renewal before the current AP expires ?. What happens if I apply for the renewal after it expires ?

No. AP is just for entry, like a visa stamp.

Nothing different than if you apply before it expires.

No - you can let the AP expire if you don't have a need for travel.
You can apply any other time in the future when you need AP (give it about 90 days for processing)
There are no problems letting AP expire.

I applied for reneval of AP after 6 months of expiration and had no problem, they were approvled in less than 3 weeks. So, dont worry apply 3 months before you have travel plans.
