How important is work history?

Hi!

I am filling out the papers that need to be sent to Kentucky.

I am wondering: how important is a brilliant work history? I have my own business and mainly do artistic freelance work on project basis. I can't really claim to have a stellar, straight A work history. I am hesitant to write that I have 2 years of work experience from a job that requires 2 years of training or more. Timewise, I think I do in total, but if I am asked to pull out pay slips and tax returns it may end up looking patchy.

However, I do have a High School Diploma and a Master's Degree from an American University.

Any thoughts?

If you're qualifying through education, I don't think that matters. I too have less than 2 years experience in my field so I'm filling DS-122 's Q7a as No and Q7b as N/A. I also got my master's from an American school.

In form DS-230, Q32 is where you list all employment regardless of length of work experience.

I can't remember exactly now but doesn't the DS122 form ask you to explain the type of work? In any case agree with the above poster that the education should mean it isn't a problem.

If you're planning on using the 2 year work experience clause as the basis of your qualification, I suggest you take special note of the language used regarding work experience. One is required to have the 2 years experience in a "qualifying occupation" - one needs to "have two years of experience in an occupation that is designated as Job Zone 4 or 5, classified in a Specific Vocational Preparation (SVP) range of 7.0 or higher".

You can find more information regarding qualifying work experience from the following link:

http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/types/types_1319.html

However, since you have the minimum required High School Diploma, I wouldn't bother to try and use the work experience option as the basis of my qualification, if I was in your position.

I highly doubt most artistic type of work qualifies for the DV requirements, regardless of whether you have your own business doing it. Definitely go for the education qualification in your case.

I'm not sure if your occupation qualifies (you'll have to check on the o-net website) but in your case I would just stick with the hich school diploma and American university to go through.
