Am glad u got ur visa but it seems like u've got a long and hard way ahead of you. Take a deep breath and u'll be just fine.

i don't know what kinda degree you have but if you don't have any, the minimum wage in most states is about $5.50-$7.50/hr. Most people barely survive on it. For some labor jobs, u really don't need to be fluent in English to get them as long as u've got the energy.
About improving your english, talking to people and hanging out will help fix that.

Anyway, plan ahead and be ready for a reality shock when u get here.

there are a lot of free ESL classes (English as a second language) at local community colleges and universities. If they are free, they are not very helpful. There are also Intensive English Programs at the universities, they usually help you advance your English very well.

You can look for jobs that don't require a lot of English in local newspapers, on www.craigslist.org, on www.careerportal.com, etc.

Remember - if you get a job where you don't have to speak English, you won't learn English very quickly, if at all. My mother-in-law has worked in a job like that for 15+ years, she has a decent life, but she only speaks and understands English, but doesn't read at all. I know a lot of foreigners who didn't learn English at all, even though they spend 20+ years in the US.
